Smoky BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwiches with Apple Slaw

There's something magical about a pile of smoky, tender pulled pork sandwiched between soft buns, topped with a crisp, tangy apple slaw. This recipe is my love letter to American barbecue. The pork shoulder is rubbed with a sweet and spicy blend, then slow-cooked until it's so tender it falls apart at the touch of a fork. The homemade BBQ sauce, with a hint of molasses and cider vinegar, caramelizes beautifully. The apple slaw adds a refreshing crunch and a touch of sweetness that cuts through the richness. It's a crowd-pleaser that turns any gathering into a feast. Get ready to get messy and enjoy every bite!

Ingredients

  • pork shoulder2 kg
  • brown sugar50 g
  • smoked paprika2 tbsp
  • garlic powder1 tbsp
  • onion powder1 tbsp
  • cayenne pepper1 tsp
  • salt1 tbsp
  • black pepper1 tbsp
  • apple cider vinegar120 ml
  • ketchup240 ml
  • molasses60 ml
  • Worcestershire sauce2 tbsp
  • hamburger buns6
  • green cabbage300 g
  • apple1 large
  • mayonnaise60 ml

Directions

  1. 1

In a small bowl, mix brown sugar, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne, salt, and pepper. Rub this spice blend all over the pork shoulder, covering it completely. Let it sit at room temperature for 30 minutes.

  2. 2

Preheat your oven to 150°C (300°F). Place the pork in a roasting pan, cover tightly with foil, and roast for 4 hours, until the meat is fork-tender and shreds easily.

  3. 3

While the pork roasts, make the BBQ sauce: in a saucepan, combine apple cider vinegar, ketchup, molasses, and Worcestershire sauce. Simmer over low heat for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Set aside.

  4. 4

For the apple slaw, shred the cabbage and julienne the apple. In a large bowl, toss them with mayonnaise and a splash of apple cider vinegar. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Refrigerate until serving.

  5. 5

Once the pork is done, transfer it to a large bowl and shred it using two forks. Discard any excess fat. Pour the BBQ sauce over the shredded pork and mix well.

  6. 6

Toast the hamburger buns if desired. Pile the pulled pork onto the buns and top with a generous amount of apple slaw. Serve immediately and enjoy!
