Greek Lamb and Feta Meatballs with Lemon Orzo
These juicy lamb meatballs are a twist on classic keftedes, with tangy feta and a hint of oregano. They're seared until golden, then simmered in a bright lemon-tomato sauce that soaks into the orzo. The dish is pure comfort: the meatballs stay tender, the orzo creamy, and each bite bursts with Mediterranean sunshine. It's a one-pan wonder that brings the taverna to your table. Serve with a sprinkle of fresh dill and a squeeze of lemon.
Ingredients
- ground lamb500g
- feta cheese, crumbled100g
- red onion, grated1 small
- garlic cloves, minced2
- dried oregano1 tsp
- egg1 large
- breadcrumbs50g
- salt1 tsp
- black pepper1/2 tsp
- olive oil2 tbsp
- canned diced tomatoes400g
- chicken broth500ml
- orzo pasta200g
- lemon juice2 tbsp
- fresh dill, chopped2 tbsp
Directions
- 1
In a large bowl, combine ground lamb, feta, grated onion, garlic, oregano, egg, breadcrumbs, salt, and pepper. Mix gently with your hands until just combined. Roll into 16 meatballs.
- 2
Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add meatballs and cook, turning occasionally, until browned on all sides, about 5 minutes. They don't need to be cooked through yet. Transfer to a plate.
- 3
Reduce heat to medium. Add diced tomatoes and chicken broth to the skillet, scraping up any browned bits. Bring to a simmer.
- 4
Stir in orzo and return meatballs to the skillet. Cover and simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until orzo is tender and meatballs are cooked through.
- 5
Stir in lemon juice and fresh dill. Taste and adjust seasoning. Serve hot, with extra feta if desired.
