German Black Forest Cake Schwarzwälder

The Black Forest Cake, or Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte, is a decadent German dessert that layers rich chocolate sponge cake with tart cherries, whipped cream, and a splash of cherry schnapps. Its deep, bittersweet chocolate flavor meets bright, fruity notes, while the velvety cream adds a light, airy contrast. A true showstopper, this cake is worth the effort for its perfect balance of indulgence and elegance, making it ideal for celebrations or a luxurious treat.

Directions

  1. 1

Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

  2. 2

Melt the dark chocolate in a double boiler or microwave. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs and sugar until light and fluffy, then add the melted chocolate and mix well.

  3. 3

Sift together the flour and baking powder, then gently fold it into the chocolate mixture. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes. Let cool completely.

  4. 4

Once cooled, slice each cake in half horizontally to create four layers. Whip the cream with the vanilla extract until soft peaks form.

  5. 5

On a serving platter, place one layer of cake, drizzle with Kirsch, spread a layer of whipped cream, and add some cherries. Repeat with the remaining layers.

  6. 6

Top the final layer with whipped cream, decorate with chocolate shavings and cherries, and refrigerate for at least one hour before serving.
